Swans stun fast-finishing Subi to book WAFLW grand final spot against ClaremontSunday, August 17, 2025 - 2:22 PM - by Jordan McArdle

Swan Districts are through to the WAFLW grand final after a stunning two-point upset win over Subiaco in Sunday’s preliminary final at Sullivan Logistics Stadium.

The Black Ducks held off a fast-finishing Lions outfit to prevail by just two points – 6.4 (40) to 6.2 (38) – and book their date with minor premiers Claremont at Mineral Resources Park next Sunday.

Subiaco bounced back from a 26-point quarter-time deficit to get to within two points with two-and-a-half minutes left when Ruby Hobbs kicked a late goal.

The Lions booted four of the last five goals of the game, but Swan Districts held their nerve for a memorable win to keep their premiership hopes alive.

State 18s MVP Carys D’Addario was best-afield as her AFLW draft stocks continue to rise, racking up 28 disposals, six tackles and a goal in a dominant midfield display.

D’Addario had 10 more possessions than any other player on the ground in another impressive performance in what's been an eye-catching campaign.

Veteran forward Emily McGuire kicked two goals, while16-year-old Summer Ajduk was lively with 14 touches and an important late major.

For Subiaco, Dhara Kerr Medal fancy Krstel Petrevski (18 disposals) stood out in the midfield, highly-rated AFLW draft prospect Olivia Wolmarans kicked two second-half goals and setup another, Tess Lyons was excellent in the ruck and 50-gamer Beatrice Devlyn was reliable as ever down back.

After not kicking a goal for the first three quarters in their come-from-behind semi-final victory over East Fremantle last week, the Swans managed four before quarter-time in a stunning purple patch.

Swan Districts did the bulk of the attacking early and were rewarded for their efforts when D’Addario booted her first goal of the season and her side’s first of the afternoon with a classy finish on the run.

Speedster Kayley King showcased her pace and elite disposal on the run with a beauty of a goal before back-to-back majors from McGuire made it a 25-point margin at the first change.

The Lions were desperate for a spark in the second quarter and WA under-18s young gun Layla Quinn-Schofield tried to provide it with a drought-breaking goal.

Subiaco made inroads before half-time, capped off by a stunning solo effort from Jorja Schell, but still trailed by 19 points and had plenty of work left to do.

Wolmarans converted a set shot early in the third term to cut the margin back to 14 points which remained until three-quarter time.

Aimee Schmidt then made it a single-digit game early in the last term, reading the play brilliantly before a quick snap and it was three in a row to the Lions.

Ajduk’s crumbing goal put the brakes on Subi’s brave fightback momentarily but the Lions weren’t done with yet, kicking back-to-back goals to nearly snatch a spot in the decider.

Claremont caused an upset in the Hart Sport Rogers Cup preliminary final, knocking off the highly-fancied Swan Districts by 20 points.

The Tigers, who finished fourth on the ladder, will be represented in both women’s deciders, taking on two-time reigning champs West Perth in the Rogers Cup decider next Sunday.

India Bonadeo was the hero with four of her team’s seven majors in a stellar display.
