WAFLW Recap: Claremont Secures Minor PremiershipTuesday, August 5, 2025 - 9:38 AM

Claremont have secured their second minor premiership in three years, claiming hosting rights for their second semi-final after defeating fellow premiership contenders Subiaco in a final round blockbuster.

East Fremantle hung on to finish in fourth spot, staving off a fast-finishing West Perth to do battle with Swan Districts in the first semi-final.

West Perth 8.7 (55) v South Fremantle 6.7 (43)

It was always going to be difficult for the Bulldogs to claim the final spot in the finals, but West Perth knew their assignment.

They simply needed to win by enough to overtake East Fremantle’s percentage and hope that the Sharks lost to Swan Districts.

The 5.3% difference heading into the round was achievable and at stages throughout Friday night’s match the Falcons seemed as if they may get there.

However, South Fremantle reduced the 19-point three quarter time deficit to go down by 12 points with West Perth finishing fifth and South Fremantle sixth.

Falcons young stars Lexi Strachan and Mia Russo were prolific and Kayla van den Heever, Megan Norbury and Sara Riou all impacted the scoreboard.

Bailey Hunt, Hannah Burt and Liusaidh Gilchrist played well for the Bulldogs, but the season came to an end for both teams.

Perth 7.7 (49) v East Perth 3.5 (23)

Perth made history earlier this year when they became the first WAFLW side to win a game in their inaugural season, and in the final round of the year they were victorious for the third time, completing a superb debut year.

Isabella Shannon, Holly Britton and Jasmine Single all won plenty of the football, while Jorja Haines booted two goals for the Demons.

Molly Warne won 42 hit outs and Milla Spalding also played well.

For the Royals it was a disappointing season, winning just one game and taking their tally to three wins in their first three seasons.

Their best player, Jess Verbrugge recently joined Essendon, but Lucy Greenwood, Summer Mollross and Brianna Hyde impressed over the weekend.

Claremont 4.10 (34) v Subiaco 0.1 (1)

The biggest match of the weekend came on Sunday afternoon with the top two sides of the competition playing for the minor premiership.

The two sides have been difficult to split all season, even drawing their only matchup against each other before this battle at Revo Fitness Stadium.

Both sides entered the match on 12 wins and a draw.

It was the Tigers who got the best of Subiaco on this occasion, holding the Lions to a single point to claim the minor premiership.

Jayme Harken and Sarah Viney won lots of the football, as did Matilda Sergeant and Juliet Kelly, whilst Ella Gilbey, Bec Anderson and Taylah Orzel cashed in with majors.

Young gun Layla Quinn-Schofield was the best of the Lions, whose usual ball-winners were down on their 2025 form.

Hali Epis, Dahna Lee and Eva Popovsky impressed, but the Lions will need to regroup ahead of their rematch with Claremont this week in the second semi-final.

Swan Districts 2.3 (15) v East Fremantle 1.5 (11)

The finals race came down to the final matchup of the season with the Sharks needing to stay within a few goals of Swan Districts to hold onto fourth position.

Neither team managed a goal in the opening quarter in tough conditions, but when Swans booted two goals to none in the second term alarms rang in the East Fremantle coaching box.

However, East Fremantle booted the only goal of the second half through Siena Jezierski-Brown to complete the season, and East Fremantle can now look forward to a rematch with the Black Ducks this week in the first semi-final.

19-year-old Luka Davis won 21 disposals and laid nine tackles, while Kayley King, Jaime Henry, Summer Adjuk and Emily McGuire were also among the best for the Black Ducks.

The Sharks were led by Ashleigh Gomes, Leanna Gubbins and Chloe Rielly, while Brooke Repacholi and Natasha Entwistle were strong contributors.

Amber Kinnane took advantage of the conditions to lay a stunning 23 tackles.
