The 2012 Landmark Country Championships kick off on Thursday, July 12 with Division One games at East Fremantle Oval and Bendigo Bank Stadium and Colts games at Claremont Oval.

The Championships will be played over four days, with qualifying games on Thursday and Friday, followed by Colts finals on Saturday at Brownes Stadium and League finals on Sunday at Medibank Stadium.

WACFL General Manager Joe Georgiades said Ongerup would step up to Division 1 this year and meet last year’s champions, South West, on the opening day at WAFL club Peel Thunder’s home ground.

"Parts of the South West region are zoned to Peel Thunder so it gives the club a great opportunity to host one of their regional leagues. It will also give people from the South West the opportunity to travel to a game closer to home and at one of the best facilities in the state," Georgiades said.

"Great Northern versus Upper Great Southern at East Fremantle Oval looks to be the match of the round on Day 1 with both teams keen to put last year’s disappointing Carnivals behind them."

"Uppers have traditionally dominated the carnival so we’re looking forward to seeing what new coach Jon Price does with the side," he said.

Six sides will play in a Round Robin format in the CBH Colts Division over the first two days at Claremont Oval and there is no doubt there will be plenty of talent scouts in attendance.

"After being in Fitzroy Crossing for the Kimberley Colts Championship, I’m really looking forward to seeing the Kimberley Spirit team come up against some of the more structured football teams like the South West and Great Southern," Georgiades said.

The Landmark Championships will also be the final opportunity for players to push for selection for WA’s State Country Team, which will travel to the National Championships in Wagga Wagga from July 19-22.
