Both events require players to be between 13 and 15 years of age and identify as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.
The Nicky Winmar Carnival has been going since 2007 and the Kirby Bentley Cup since 2014. Both carnivals are annual events which use a round robin format to engage players from metropolitan and regional locations with the WA football pathway.
They also provide a selection platform for the Sate-based high performance KickStart Academy, which then leads to selection for the National AFL Boomerangs and Woomeras programs.
This year, standalone carnivals will also be hosted in Karratha on March 21 and 22, for remote communities in the Pilbara region
