Maximising opportunities for WAFL Colts

WAFL Colts fixtures have been amended in Rounds 5 and 7 to maximise selection and recruiting opportunities for the WAFL’s most talented young players.

The start times have been changed for this Saturday’s West Perth v Peel Thunder Colts game at Arena Joondalup and next fortnight’s South Fremantle v East Fremantle Colts game at Fremantle Oval.

WAFL Operations Manager Cameron Knapton said the fixture changes meant AFL recruiters and State 18’s selectors would be able to attend all four Colts games on both weekends.

Lions sign baseball star

SUBIACO has signed former Major League Baseball player and national representative Luke Hughes to a deal which could see the Perth Heat star make a surprise return to the sport he quit to pursue his baseball dream.

Hughes, who represented Australia as recently as last month at the World Baseball Classic, failed to secure a professional contract for the 2013 baseball season.

In 2010 at age 26, Hughes joined an elite group when he hit a home run in his first plate appearance at the Major League level.

Round 4 WAFL Results

ROUND 4 of the 2013 WAFL season was split over Friday night and Saturday afternoon with West Perth, Claremont and Perth all remaining unbeaten while East Fremantle scored a thumping win.

The action started on Friday night at Fremantle Oval with West Perth holding on to win a thriller against the Bulldogs, 13.8 (86) to 13.5 (83).

Then on Saturday, Perth won a nail-biter over Swan Districts 15.13 (103) to 14.17 (101) at Bassendean's Steel Blue Oval with Claremont too good for East Perth winning 19.15 (129) to 11.9 (75) and East Fremantle thrashing Subiaco 25.11 (161) to 14.8 (92).

West Perth opened up a 32-point lead early in the second quarter, but South Fremantle refused to go away and were in front by a goal at three quarter-time.

WAFL Round 4 Preview

WAFL Round 4 action sees another Friday night fixture at Fremantle Oval before three big games on Saturday afternoon.

South Fremantle will host West Perth at Fremantle Oval on Friday night before on Saturday, East Perth takes on Claremont at Leederville's Medibank Stadium, East Fremantle hosts Subiaco at East Fremantle Oval and Swan Districts battles Perth at Bassendean's Steel Blue Oval.

There's some big news at selection across the board too with Travis Casserly, Dayle Garlett, Michael Swan, Alex Silvagni and Daniel Kerr among the inclusions, and Jason Salecic, Andrew Embley, Blayne Wilson, Andrew Foster, Mitch Brown and Garrick Ibbotson among those going out for their respective sides.

Round 3 WAFL Wrap Up

ROUND 3 of the WAFL was a weekend where the captains stepped up led by Perth's Paul Bevan and East Fremantle's Mark McGough who put on best on ground performances on Good Friday and Saturday respectively.

McGough led East Fremantle to a 17.9 (111) to 13.10 (88) win over Peel Thunder on Friday at Mandurah's Bendigo Bank Stadium while Bevan was superb leading Perth to a 16.9 (105) to 14.8 (92) victory on Saturday at Lathlain's Brownes Stadium.

There were two other matches on the weekend as well as with Subiaco winning the battle of the Medibank Stadium co-tenants against East Perth 16.8 (104) to 13.11 (89) on Good Friday with Claremont also proving too good for Swan Districts, winning 18.17 (125) to 9.10 (64) at Bassendean's Steel Blue Oval.

The results leave Claremont, West Perth and Perth undefeated to start the WAFL season with South Fremantle and Peel the two sides yet to record a win.
