Finals anticipation gripping WAFL crowds Print E-mail

With six clubs still in contention to play in this year’s WAFL finals, crowds have responded by showing great support for their teams.

WAFL crowds are up compared to this time last year on the back of a fantastic turnout last weekend for Round 21 action.

A total of 9003 fans attended four WAFL games last Saturday, including almost 3,000 at Steele Blue Oval who witnessed Subiaco full forward  Brad Smith kick his 100th goal for the season.

In the penultimate round of WAFL games this Saturday, there are some mouth-watering contests that await as Swan Districts, East Fremantle and Peel Thunder are still in the race to claim the fourth and final place on offer in this year’s finals series.

Heading into Round 22 a total of 163,705 people have headed to a WAFL game, almost 2000 more than the same time last year. And last weekend’s crowds were the fourth highest for the season.

“Crowds are sitting on the edge of their seats at this time of the season with so many teams in the race for this year’s finals,” said West Australian Football Commission Director of Football Grant Dorrington.

“This season the WAFL competition has been one of the closest in many years and apart from a well-disciplined Subiaco team losing just one game for the year, the rest of the teams have been fighting it out for a taste of finals action.

“We only have two rounds to go so fans need to get out and throw their support behind their team to try and get them into what promises to be an enthralling finals series.

“Our clubs have done a mountain of work trying to connect to their local communities and it has resulted in their community getting behind them.”
