WA Football initiatives receive Sport Industry Awards

THE West Australian Football Commission and Swan Districts Football Club both received awards at the 2011 Sport and Recreation Industry Awards on Friday night, November 25.

The WAFC received the Commitment to Workforce Development Award while Swan Districts Football Club claimed the award for Provision of Sport and Recreation to Regional WA and also scooped the night’s most prestigious honour - the $10,000 Minister’s Award for Industry Excellence.

Sport and Recreation Minister Terry Waldron congratulated both the WAFC and SDFC on winning awards and paid special tribute to SDFC for taking out the overall Industry Excellence Award.

“The Award for Industry Excellence recognises the best of all award winners from the 14 categories with the Swan Districts Football Club judged a finalist in three categories,” Mr Waldron said.

“The club has shown outstanding leadership and innovation by providing programs in regional communities such as Onslow and Port Hedland that have attracted participants from all age groups, both male and female.

“Its partnerships with local and corporate organisations have achieved outstanding outcomes for the education, health and wellbeing of the participants in these regions.”

The WAFC was recognised for its approach to professional development and addressing the challenges of attracting and retaining key staff in a competitive labour market.

Sharing best practices across the industry and an ongoing commitment to the enrichment and development of staff as part of the strategic planning process were also key components of the WAFC’s approach.

The WAFC was also a finalist in the Excellence in Volunteer Support Award, while SDFC was a finalist in the Commitment to Participation category and the Community Event Award for initiatives run through the V-Swans community and game development arm of the club.
