AAMI WAFL Premiership season Round 23

EAST Perth continued its massive turnaround this season to beat Claremont on Saturday to book a finals berth as Subiaco, Swan Districts and West Perth also record final round WAFL victories.

East Perth had to beat Claremont to make the finals and overcame some inaccurate kicking to do so with a 12.23 (95) to 11.13 (79) victory at Medibank Stadium.

That made for a disappointing day for West Perth, who beat Perth 16.16 (112) to 14.3 (87), but missed out on finals with the Royals' win.

Subiaco also beat South Fremantle 33.9 (207) to 21.18 (144) in a massively high scoring contest at Fremantle Oval and Swan Districts thrashed Peel 22.25 (157) to 7.5 (47).

The results set up this week's finals that will see Claremont take on Swan Districts at Claremont Oval in the second semi-final and East Fremantle host East Perth at East Fremantle Oval in the first semi-final.

West Perth finishes fifth, Subiaco sixth, South Fremantle seventh, Peel eighth and Perth ninth.

The round was also the farewell for a host of star WAFL performers including Subiaco's Marc Webb, and West Perth's Clayton Lasscock and Callum Chambers.

THE BIG WINNERS

East Perth started the 2010 season disastrously slipping to a 2-7 record, but since then has hit back hard to now have won six straight games to book in a first finals spot since 2007.

The Royals' have now only lost to Claremont and Swan Districts since being at 2-7, and have played some inspired, tough and uncompromising football to be looking like a team capable of causing plenty of havoc come finals time.

With veterans Craig Wulff, Craig Glancy, Michael Swan, Luke Webster, Zach Beeck and Adam Pickering leading the way with the help of youngsters Aaron Sweet (pictured), Brendan Lee, Don Stirling, Tom Howlett, Jordan Eastwell, Jye Keath and Luke Sampey who are standing up strongly.

THE BIG LOSERS

Peel Thunder suffered its ninth 100-plus point loss of the season on Saturday against a Swan Districts' side that was clearly desperate to make a statement coming into the finals.

Peel has made some progress in 2010 in terms of building a better culture that should help turn the club around in the long-term once the new facility is up and running, but they have struggled to be competitive at times.

That was again the case on Saturday with Swans' simply dominating with 47 scoring shots to 12, 172 more disposals and 37 more inside-50 entries.

Peel finishes the season with nine losses of over 100 points and an average losing margin of 94, but the Thunder did win three matches and avoided the wooden spoon.
