Subiaco salutes retirees

Subiaco Football Club has farewelled five players following the completion of the 2009 season.

Brad Smith, Allistair Pickett, Daniel Chick, David Mapleston and Caine Hayes have all announced their retirement from WAFL football.

Smith kicked 530 goals in 140 games and won four Bernie Naylor Medals as the league's leading goal kicker. He also won the club fairest and best and Grand Final Simpson Medal in 2007, playing in a total of three premierships.

Pickett played in all four premierships after coming to Subiaco following his Sandover Medal win with Peel in 2002. He won another Sandover in 2004, the club's fairest and best the same year and was named last year in Subiaco's Team of the Century.

Chick played two seasons for Subiaco and 22 games in total. Chick’s WAFL career also includes 27 games for East Fremantle in 1994 and 1995.

Mapleston played 86 games for the Lions, playing in three premierships and won the SFC leading goal kicker in 2006. Mapleston kicked 176 goals in total for his WAFL career.

Hayes played 121 WAFL games (79 for Subiaco) playing in three premierships. He was also a State Representative in 2006 and won the Simpson Medal that year also.

2009 league coach Scott Watters acknowledged a grand final loss wasn’t the ideal way for them to exit, but said it didn’t diminish any of their achievements.

"It's always sad when terrific players of a footy club move on, but some of them have given everything they've had and the time is probably right for a couple of them. You'd love them to play forever, but it's not the case," he said.

The Subiaco Football Club took the opportunity to pay tribute to these retiring players at the Outridge Medal presentation night on October 15.

The club wishes these players all the very best for their future.
