CLAREMONT and East Perth both claimed upset wins as the unpredictable
results continued in Round 13 of the West Australian Football League season at
the weekend.
East Perth, who hosted Peel Thunder in Margaret River as part of the Country Sports Enrichment Scheme, rose to the occasion in front of their regional fans to claim a six-goal win after a strong finish in wet and windy conditions.
Claremont also claimed an upset win, denting East Fremantle’s hopes of breaking into the top four with a 14-point victory at Claremont Oval spearheaded by four goals from Ian Richardson. Despite trailing early, the Tigers hit back with five goals to two in the third term to set up the surprise win.
Other Round 13 contests saw Swan Districts defeat Perth by 46 points at Steel Blue Oval, with missed chances costing the Demons dearly in the 18.7 (115) to 8.21 (69) result.
Meanwhile, Subiaco returned to the top of the WAFL ladder on percentage with a 28-point win over South Fremantle in the top-of-the-table clash at Fremantle Oval.
The Lions led throughout the contest, taking a narrow three-point advantage into the first break before building on their lead in each quarter.
Brad Smith and Blake Broadhurst booted four goals each to set up the win, while Shaun Hilderbrandt was again dominant through the midfield to be named best on ground.
