Subiaco District continues outstanding Umpire Development

The Subiaco District has a proud tradition of developing quality umpires and this year has been no exception, with umpires at all levels showing they have what it takes to move through the ranks.

At the end of last season the Subiaco juniors had three umpires promoted to the Junior District Talent Squad, one promoted from that squad to the senior community group and a former umpire and coach selected as a WAFL Umpiring Match Day Coach.

The District’s achievements have continued in 2011.

After a strong preseason Matt Moore, in his first year on the senior community panel, was selected to umpire a WAFL Colts game early in the year and has been a regular fixture in A Grade football.

He will now be joined on the senior community panel by Jason O’Malley and Matt Beavis, who are in their second and first seasons respectively in the junior district talent squad.

Subiaco District Umpiring Manager Cameron Douglas praised the umpires for their efforts and said this was a great achievement for all those involved in the District.

“While we can take praise as coaches for what has happened, the umpires themselves have done the hard work and been rewarded for putting in the effort,” he said.

“The main advantage we have is the environment in which we can develop our umpires and we should be thankful to the clubs, JCC and DFDC for providing that safe environment for not just umpires but players, coaches and everyone involved in football.”

The Subiaco District also celebrated earlier in the season when former coach and umpire Pete McCaw umpired his first WAFL League game.

Umpiring the Subiaco v East Fremantle match in Round 3 was a another significant achievement for the district and is another example of the ongoing commitment to umpiring.

“In the past we have had a significant contribution to umpiring at higher ranks, which shows we are doing our job well at the grassroots. People like Andrew Ball, Greg Sinclair and Peter McCaw have all done their part as previous head coaches, building on the work of those before them to take this group to the next level.

“I’m sure there will be more significant achievements to come not only this year but into the future.”
