Neates, Hardingham selected in pre-season draft

ANOTHER two West Australians have been added to AFL lists following the completion of this morning's (December 15) AFL pre-season draft.

Diminutive Claremont midfielder Ryan Neates was selected by West Coast with pick five, while East Fremantle's Kyle Hardingham was chosen at number seven by Essendon.

Neates played for Western Australia's undefeated State 18s side and produced a series of stunning sprints and leaps at the draft tests.

WA hosts High Performance course

THE Australian Football Coaches Association hosted a High Performance Coaching Course in Western Australia last week, with coaches travelling from around the country to attend.

Commencing on Tuesday, December 1 and concluding on Sunday, December 6, the course was held at Subiaco Oval and featured presentations by former AFL coaches including David Parkin, Stan Alves, Neale Daniher and Rob Wiley.

Starcevich new High Performance Manager

FORMER Collingwood and Brisbane AFL player Craig Starcevich has been appointed as the West Australian Football Commission’s new High Performance Manager to lead the WA Talent Academy into 2010.

Starcevich, who is originally from Western Australia and won East Perth’s Best and Fairest Award in 1986, went on to play 144 games of AFL and five State of Origin matches before retiring and stepping into a physical performance role with the Brisbane Lions in 1997.

AFL Draft highlights strength of WA football

THE AFL National Draft on November 26 produced another outstanding result for WA football with 13 players selected, including two Top 10 picks.

The strength of the WAFL development pathway has again been underlined with the result, which means that 68 (13 draftees + 55 listed) WA players have been added to AFL club lists over the past 3 years via the National, Rookie and Pre Season drafts.

AFL legends to provide unique coaching insight

AUSTRALIAN football legends David Parkin and Stan Alves will provide an insight into their coaching careers as presenters at next fortnight’s Australian Football Coaches Association seminar and awards night.   

The event will commence with the AFCA seminar at 1pm on Saturday December 5, with Parkin to present a session on coaching philosophy and developing a successful culture and Alves to speak about effective training drills and the importance of preparation.

AFCA president Rob Wiley described the seminar as a great opportunity for all levels of coaches and encouraged everyone to take advantage of the occasion.
