Western Australia’s State 16s claimed Division One of the 2012 NAB AFL 16s Championships today (Friday, July 13) after defeating Victoria Country in the final game at Blacktown, NSW.
WA defeated Vic Country 9.14 (68) to 8.6 (54) to remain undefeated at the Championships after earlier wins over South Australia and Victoria Metro.
WAFC Director of Pathways and Competitions Grant Dorrington congratulated the team, coaches and support staff on a tremendous effort at the Championships and said the win was fantastic news for WA football.
“This is a great reward for all of the hard work and effort put in by the players and everyone else involved with the WA talent pathway,” Dorrington said.
“The influence of head coach Rob Wiley in this crucial development role and the input of support staff such as Steve Woodhouse, Tim Gepp and Phil Matera, as well as current AFL players Adam Selwood and Aaron Sandilands has been invaluable.”
“On behalf of WA football, I congratulate everyone involved with the development of these players on a job well done,” he said.
The newly formed WA North West side is also on target to take out the Division 3 title at the Championships heading into the final game tomorrow against the Flying Boomerangs.
WA North West has already defeated South Pacific and the World XVIII leading up to tomorrow’s final fixture at 9.30am in Blacktown, NSW.
