State 18s WA v NSW/ACT

WESTERN Australia’s State 18s play NSW/ACT at Arena Joondalup at noon tomorrow (Saturday, June 9) in the second round of the NAB AFL National 18s Championships.

As part of the WA State Talent Academy rotation policy, six deserving players will make their State football debut (Josh Simpson, Jack Martin, Laurence Grescos, Dominic Sheed, Marco Paparone and Tim Sutherland).

The captain for this game will be Mason Shaw from South Fremantle FC / Winnacott JFC.

“Producing results while developing elite players and coaches is the balance we are aiming to achieve,” said State Talent Academy Manager Raff Guadagnino.

“While winning Championship games is important, maintaining a developmental focus for all players and coaches is the key to the Academy philosophy.

“The results are evident when you look at the transition of past Academy players into the WAFL and AFL such as Stephen Hill, Nic Naitanui, Brad Sheppard, Hayden Ballantyne, Jack Darling, Mitch Duncan, Alex Fasolo, Daniel Rich and Anthony Morabito.”

Guadagnino said that WA would not take tomorrow’s NSW/ ACT game lightly, with a well-respected team expected to play a hard and physical brand of football.

“We are anticipating a tough contest but with the open space at Arena Joondalup we hope the WA style of play will be at full force. Quick ball movement, explosive running and most importantly team-first actions will be the key to success. If the ball stays dry we should see a very different game to last week,” he said.
