The AFL has released the names of the medium midfielders who will attend the 2010 NAB AFL Draft Combines to be held at national and state level beginning September 28.
The list includes 16 players from Western Australia, as well as 21 players from Victoria, four players from South Australia, two from NSW/ACT and one player from the Northern Territory.
AFL National Talent Manager, Kevin Sheehan said he was sure the selection of medium midfielders would be a dominant feature of the 2010 NAB AFL Draft when it takes place on the Gold Coast on November 18.
“If performance on the board and not just potential is taken into account, the medium midfielders will be very prominent in this year’s draft.
“From the 13 medium midfielders invited to the National Combine, no fewer than seven earned All Australian honours at this year’s NAB AFL Under-18 Championships”.
Mr Sheehan said that a number of well-known names are among the medium midfielders who have been invited to the 2010 NAB AFL Draft Combines, including a few outliers attending the state Combines.
“The group of medium midfielders invited to the National Combine includes the likes of Peel Thunder’s exciting Harley Bennell, who won the Larke Medal and Division One Best and Fairest in the 2010 NAB AFL Under-18 Championships.
Mr Sheehan said that in last year’s NAB AFL Draft the first six players selected were medium midfielders, headed by Melbourne’s Rising Star nominee, Tom Scully (182cm, 77kg) who became the fifth medium midfielder to be taken at number one in the Draft.
“Medium midfielders rank second behind ruckmen in terms of number one selections with no fewer than six ruckmen being called first as we head towards the 25th NAB AFL Draft on the Gold Coast.”
