In a terrific promotion for school football, CBC Fremantle defeated a gallant Woodvale Senior High School by 12 points to win the Jakovich Division of the Belt up Cup for the second year in a row.

This year’s grand final was played as the curtain-raiser to the Fremantle versus North Melbourne match at Subiaco Oval on June 14 with CBC winning 8.7 (55) to 6.7 (43).

The Belt up Cup competition is the largest upper secondary school football competition in WA, with over 100 metropolitan and country schools competing this year.

In a high standard game CBC started in ominous form, kicking the first five goals before Woodvale settled to kick the next two to trail by 21 points at half-time.

Woodvale coach Wayne Jaggard’s, half-time speech impacted immediately as Woodvale came out with a renewed desire and kicked the first three goals of the second half, to cut the margin to three. With the game up for grabs CBC were able to continue to maintain the pressure they had demonstrated all day and although Woodvale continued to work hard CBC’s superior ball use enabled them to run out winners by 12 points.

AFL and WA Hall of Fame inductee and competition patron Glen Jakovich presented the Belt up Cup and medallions to schools, coaches and umpires along with Fab Zanuttigh, Manager Motor Vehicle Personal Injury Division with the Insurance Commission of WA and Melanie Green, Key Stakeholder Relationship Manager with the Office of Road Safety

The West Australian Football Commission (WAFC) greatly appreciates the support received from the Insurance Commission of WA through the Road Safety Council for the sponsorship of the Belt up Cup.

The WAFC would like to take this opportunity sincerely thank those teachers who gave up their time to coach a school football team in the 2008 Belt up Cup competition.
