WPFC giving Indigenous students a kick-start

West Perth Football Club will teach school students football coaching skills as part of a new indigenous sports program beginning this school term at Clarkson Community High School.

The program will run before school on Wednesdays for 10 weeks and involve up to 61 students who will learn about nutrition, healthy eating and coaching.

Students will develop a coaching program and eventually run football clinics at Clarkson Primary School.

West Perth Football Club District Manager Andrew Ridley said the program aimed to provide a pathway beyond school in the field of sport.

 “We want to provide applicants with fun and varied football activities, which they can then run in a primary school teaching environment,” Ridley said.

Mandurah College claims a rare double

Mandurah Senior College became the first school to win both the Cable and Walker Divisions of the Belt Up Cup after remaining undefeated in both competitions.

And remarkably, the grand finals of each were played in the space of three days.

Mandurah kick-started their campaign against Albany SHS, Newton Moore SHS, Bunbury SHS, Australind SHS and Geraldton Senior College in the Bill Walker Division (A Section) at the 2009 Senior High Schools Country Week carnival and after going through the week undefeated, met Newton Moore SHS in the grand final, winning 8.5 (53) to 7.6 (48)

Ambassadors -Nominate Now to Win AFL Grand Final Trip!

It is now time to nominate for the 2009 AFL School Ambassador of the Year Awards. Our State Winner wins a trip for 2 to the 2009 AFL Grand Final and the Best Primary and High School Ambassadors win trips for 2 to the first round of AFL Finals in the first week of September.

Schools battle it out for Grand Final glory

La Salle College, Willetton Senior High School and Winthrop Baptist College all celebrated Grand Final success last weekend after taking out their respective school-based football competitions.

La Salle College won their first Belt Up Cup in the Jakovich Division grand final since 1990 after a commanding 45-point defeat of Winthrop Baptist College as the curtain raiser to the West Coast Eagles v Hawthorn match.

West Coast visit Country Week

MORE than 3500 country school kids were treated to a visit from the entire West Coast Eagles squad on Tuesday (June 30) during Country Week at Perth’s UWA sports grounds.

This was the first year the Eagles attended the event, which is coordinated by School Sports WA, as part of their community development program.

Players such as Nic Naitanui, Daniel Kerr, Dean Cox and Adam Hunter spoke to the students about career pathways in football, nutrition, recovery after a game and what it is like to play at the highest level.
