Governor Stirling wins Belt Up Cup

The 2010 Belt Up Cup competition concluded on the weekend with Governor Stirling Senior High School winning their first Belt Up Cup Cable Division grand final since 1999 after a commanding 44 point defeat over Clontarf Aboriginal College. This year’s grand final was played as the curtain raiser to the West Coast Eagles v Carlton match.

The Belt Up Cup competition is the largest upper secondary school football competition in WA, with  3,250 students from over 130 metropolitan and country schools competing this year.

To help promote the shared responsibility of road safety, all players, coaches and umpires observed a minutes silence before the start of the match and wore red armbands to symbolise those who have been killed or seriously injured on Western Australian roads.

Melanie Green, Insurance Commission of WA Relationship Manager with the Office of Road Safety along with current West Coast Eagles players and former Clontarf students Lewis Broome and Gerrick Weedon presented the Belt Up Cup and medallions to the players, coaches and umpires.

Shannon Fernando (Governor Stirling) and Lindsay Ryan (Clontarf) were presented with the special Belt Up footballs used in the match as recognition for being their school best players in the grand final. The Rhys Kampen Memorial Medal was awarded to Ryan Congdon from Governor Stirling for his outstanding contributions throughout the competition.

“The West Australian Football Commission greatly appreciates the support received from the Insurance Commission of WA through the Office of Road Safety for the sponsorship of the Belt Up Cup. On behalf of the Commission I would also like to sincerely thank those teachers who gave up their time to coach a school football team in the 2010 Belt Up Cup competition” said Youth and Secondary School Manager Darren Davis.
