WAFL State 16s named for NationalsTuesday, July 1, 2014 - 11:40 AM

Western Australia’s State 16s squads have been finalised for the 2014 NAB AFL National 16s Championships on the Gold Coast,  from July 5-12.

The Division 1 side will be led by experienced development coach John Hancock, who was the State 16s Head Coach last year and an Assistant Coach for the State 16s in 2010 and 2011 and State 18s in 2012.

WA’s Division 3 side has been formed out of the North West Academy, which includes players from the Kimberley, Pilbara, and Gascoyne regions. The Academy is managed by the West Australian Football Commission with the support of the AFL and in partnership with regional partners V Swans and the Kimberley Football Association. It will be led by head coach Clint Degebrodt.

The Academy players have undertaken skills training, leadership, nutrition and education sessions to enhance their overall development in the lead up to the Championships. The final squads have been selected based on form, fitness and commitment to the program.

WAFL Pathways Manager Darren Davis said the Academy program aimed to provide a team and coaching environment in which every individual had the opportunity to develop.

“It’s also a chance to display their talent, leadership and work ethic in an environment that prepares players for progression to WAFL Colts or the WAFL State 18s Academy,” he said.

“We are confident that we have put together a group of talented young footballers who are more than capable of matching it with their peers.”
