Round 8 Saturday WAFL ResultsSaturday, May 10, 2014 - 5:45 PM - by Chris Pike

SUBIACO, Swan Districts and East Perth all showed why they are the current top three teams in the WAFL with big wins on Saturday against Perth, East Fremantle and Claremont respectively.

All three winners on Saturday recorded emphatic victories with Subiaco beating Perth 16.12 (108) to 11.8 (74) at Lathlain Park, Swan Districts downing East Fremantle 20.15 (135) to 10.15 (75) at Steel Blue Oval and East Perth thumping Claremont 19.10 (124) to 6.8 (44) at Medibank Stadium.

The results mean that Subiaco maintains top spot on the WAFL ladder with a 6-1 record just percentage ahead of the also 6-1 Swan Districts.

East Perth is just percentage back as well on 6-2 having now played every side in the competition once and with a bye to come before the State game, then its Foxtel Cup match and the WA Day derby with West Perth.

The final game of Round 8 will take place on Sunday at Arena Joondalup with West Perth hosting the winless Peel Thunder. After Saturday's results, a win for the Falcons will see the reigning premiers move up into fourth position at the expense of Perth.

East Perth ended up beating Claremont by 80 points having dominated the first three quarters of the game, and leading by 83 points at three quarter-time.

The Royals kicked the only seven goals of the second quarter and then the first two of the third term to set up the emphatic victory.

It is Claremont's fifth loss of the season and none have been by less than 64 points with the average losing margin being 73 points.

Co-captain Brendan Lee was best afield for East Perth in just his second game of the season after a nasty finger injury finishing with 31 possessions and a goal.

West Coast's Patrick McGinnity and Sam Butler weren’t far off with McGinnity ending up with 32 possessions and two goals, and Butler 28 disposals and two goals.

Steven Payne was also terrific on the wing for the Royals with 27 touches and two goals with Brant Colledge racking up 26 disposals, Nathan Blee 25, Freddie Clutterbuck 23 and Craig Wulff 22 (two goals).

Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls and Jeremy McGovern kicked two goals each as well.

Luke Blackwell worked tirelessly for Claremont with 29 possessions with Tom Taylor finishing with 28 touches, Tom Ledger 21 and returning captain Jake Murphy 20.

Jordan McAllister tried hard in defence and had 18 touches while Trinity Handley also battled away at both ends in his first match since Round 1.

Subiaco suffered its first loss of the season last week against Swan Districts, but bounced back hard against Perth on Sunday ending up winning by 34 points.

Shane Yarran booted four goals for Subiaco with Matt Boland kicking three and Chris Deluca two.

George Hampson missed the loss to Swan Districts but returned for Subiaco and finished with 25 possessions and a goal with captain Kyal Horsley also gathering 25 disposals.

Joel Latham finished the game with 23 possessions, Justin Joyce 23, Wayde Twomey 19, Jason Bristow 17, Chris Phelan 17 and ruckman Frank Stockley 16 to go with 36 hit outs.

Joel Leeson, Paul Bevan, Brennan Stack, Haydn Busher and Callum Collard all kicked two goals apiece for Perth with Cale Morton outstanding with 34 possessions, 11 marks and a goal.

Dene White continued his strong form this season with another 26 touches with Michael Florio gathering 22, Cameron Manuel 20 and Gerald Ugle 19.

Swan Districts won its sixth straight match to be the hottest team in the WAFL right now with an emphatic 60-point win over East Fremantle.

For the third straight week, East Fremantle was terrible for the first three quarters to be out of the contest at three quarter-time.

However, like against South Fremantle and East Perth, the Sharks showed some fight in the last quarter this time kicking four last quarter goals to only lose by 60 points, but again it only papered over the cracks of yet another listless showing up until the last term.

The news is all positive at Swan Districts, though, with the black-and-whites quickly becoming the story of the WAFL season.

Tim Geappen and Matthew Jukes kicked four goals apiece for Swans with Matthew Rogers continuing his scintillating form with another 33 possessions, eight marks and two goals as he is quickly emerging as perhaps the form player of the competition.

Justin Simpson was again outstanding at centre half-back finishing with 31 possessions while Ryan Davis was superb with 31 touches, 10 inside 50s and a goal.

Blaine Boekhorst also had it 29 times for Swans, Matt Riggio 28, Adam Faulkner 22, Kirk Ugle 21, Connor Blakely 20, Jarrad Blight 18 and Nathan Blakely 18 to go with 16 hit outs.

Former captain Mark McGough returned for East Fremantle and fought hard for 27 possessions with Rory O'Brien also collecting 30 possessions, Bradd Dalziell 25 (and two goals), Jayden Schofield 22 and Cameron Eardley 21.

Danny Chartres tried hard with 18 possessions and 15 hit outs while Brett Peake kicked two goals.
