State 18 girls crowned National ChampionsFriday, May 9, 2014 - 11:26 AM

Western Australia have defeated powerhouse Victoria Metro in a nail biting Grand Final by 25 points, to be crowned the 2014 Youth Girls National Champions.

Inspiring performances from WA’s Asha Price and Hayley Miller in the second quarter set up the 7.8 (50) to 4.1 (25) win that was one year in the making.

Losing to Vic Metro in last year's decider by 15 points, the girls from the west played their hearts out to make sure history didn’t repeat itself.

Both sides were playing some determined football in the first term, all players going hard at the football and desperate not to concede the first major.

Georgia Gourlay got the breakthrough late in the quarter for Vic Metro, kicking a goal from a fifty metre penalty.

However, it was all WA in the second quarter, with two goals from Asha Price and at an outstanding goal to Kelly Gibson to give them a handy 13 point lead midway through the term.

Hayley Miller had her best game of the Championships, her clean hands and accuracy setting up Western Australia’s forward pressure.

Vic Metro got one back through Emily Rose-Browning, but Cassie Davidson was quick on the reply, slotting through a goal from a very tight angle.

The Victorians were not done with yet, coming out of the gates firing in the third quarter, to give Western Australia a scare.

A goal to Alex Quigley began the comeback, but it was an inspirational snap from Isabel Huntington that had WA on edge.

With only a five point advantage at three quarter time, the crowd at Gungahlin Enclosed Oval were ready for a thriller final term.

Asha Price once again had all the answers for Western Australia though, assisting Kellie Gibson with the first major, and kicking her third only one minute later to seal the victory.
