SUBIACO and East Perth continued their unbeaten starts to the WAFL season after two matches with impressive victories on Saturday afternoon while Claremont bounced back from a poor start in Round 1 to upset the reigning premiers West Perth.

Following Round 2 getting underway on Friday night at Fremantle Oval with Perth coming back from 44 points behind to beat South Fremantle by five points to sour the celebration of Kris Miller's 300th WAFL appearance, there were three matches on Saturday.

East Fremantle and Subiaco made the trip north to play in Geraldton and it was the Lions who proved too good, winning 16.12 (108) to 6.16 (52).

East Perth then overcame a dogged Swan Districts in the final quarter to win 16.13 (109) to 14.7 (91) at Leederville's Medibank Stadium while Claremont kept West Perth scoreless in the fourth quarter to end up winning 10.10 (70) to 8.10 (58).

The Round 2 results mean that Subiaco, Perth and East Perth are on top of the WAFL ladder with two wins from two matches.

Claremont and East Fremantle both have a win and a loss after two games while West Perth and South Fremantle are winless from two games, and Peel Thunder and Swan Districts without a victory after just the one match.

West Perth hosted its first game at Arena Joondalup and unfurled the 2013 premiership flag before bounce down, and then the Falcons went on to lead by 15 points midway through the third quarter.

However, Claremont went on to kick five of the last six goals of the game, including keeping West Perth scoreless in the last term, to end up winning by 12 points and bounce back from a horror 65-point Round 1 loss to Perth.

Claremont's usual midfield suspects Luke Blackwell and Jake Murphy were outstanding with Blackwell finishing with 32 possessions and Murphy 31.

Tom Ledger also added 30 touches with Ryan Neates gathering 23 disposals, Matt Orzel 22 and Andrew Foster 18 to go with three goals.

Mathew Aitchison played his first game in the WAFL since 13 matches with Swan Districts with the last one in 2011, and made his Claremont debut by having the job on West Perth premiership veteran midfielder Matt Guadagnin, and he was terrific keeping him to just 16 disposals.

Shane Nelson finished with 38 possessions and Aaron Black 34 for the Falcons while also combining for 29 clearances between them.

Steven Browne also gathered 27 possessions for West Perth, Rohan Kerr 27, Ray Bartholomew 22, Laine Rasmussen 20, Luke Tedesco 20 and Brayden Antonio 19.

Anthony Tsalikis was terrific up forward booting a game-high four goals for West Perth.

Subiaco continued its unbeaten start to the 2014 season backing up an impressive 38-point Round 1 over South Fremantle by beating East Fremantle by 56 points in Geraldton on Saturday.

After having the Bulldogs kick 9.19 against them last week, the Sharks booted just 6.16 against the Lions on Saturday as they again kicked more accurately with 16.12 on their way to the thumping victory.

Rhys Waters, Chris Deluca, Shaun Hildebrandt and Shane Yarran all booted two goals apiece for Subiaco with Hildebrandt racking up 31 possessions, Jason Bristow 24, Wayde Twomey 23, Justin Joyce 20 and Lachlan Delahunty 19.

Boston Williamson kicked two of East Fremantle's six goals for the day with Rory O'Brien finishing with 31 possessions, Bradd Dalziell 24, Jamie McNamara 23 and Scott Hancock 20.

Swan Districts made its first appearance of 2014 after the Round 1 bye and stuck with East Perth for three quarters and even leading at every change including still by three points at three quarter-time.

 

However, East Perth kicked five goals to two in the final quarter to end up winning a hard fought contest by 18 points.

Josh Smith and Fraser McInnes kicked three goals each for East Perth with Dom Sheed, Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls and Craig Wulff adding two apiece.

Steven Payne racked up 24 possessions, Adam Carter 24, Sam Butler 24, Sheed 23, Nathan Blee 23 and Ashley Smith 19.

Adam Faulkner, Matthew Rogers and Blaine Boekhorst all kicked two goals each for Swans with Faulkner racking up 25 possessions, Aaron Elari 24, Justin Simpson 24, Matt Riggio 21 and Boekhorst 20.
