NAIDOC Footy Features In Goldfields ShowdownThursday, May 19, 2022 - 11:16 AM - by Mark Readings

THE artistic talent of Gertrina Hayden will be on display in Saturday's WAFL match between Subiaco and Swan Districts in Kalgoorlie.

Hayden produced the winning design for the WACFL/ICWA Belt Up NAIDOC football for 2022, which will be used on the game day ball at Sir Richard Moore Oval.

"The design depicts the green ovals played on all over the country, with the blue and brown background and dots showing connection to the North and South of WA," Hayden said.

"Three large lines with white dots show the road travelled by many families and communities to different towns and ovals for the love of the game.

"The small white lines join communities and football ovals, connecting main roads onto smaller country roads."

The design is being used on 400 footballs provided to senior teams (Men’s and Women’s) in WA as part of the annual Belt Up Round which has entered its 24th year in 2022.

"I love the product and I think the footy looks great with a touch of artwork on it," Hayden said.

"I hope this will be an ongoing opportunity for others to have their designs highlighted."

A footy fan who follows Perth in the WAFL, Gertrina comes from an artistic background.

"I’m a mother of four beautiful children and a contemporary Aboriginal artist with family connections in North Badimia Yamatji and South Whadjuk Noongar Country," Hayden said.

"I paint from the heart and love to illustrate stories of my childhood. For me, painting keeps me connected to my culture and country.

"It's always a good feeling when your art can make others smile and they enjoy it as much as I do."

Subiaco hosts Swan Districts at Sir Richard Moore Oval on Saturday at 12.10pm.

The match will be televised on Channel 7, Live Streamed on the AFL App, and broadcast on SEN WA.
