WAFLW PREMIERSHIP SEASON – ROUND 10

SWAN DISTRICTS 1.1 (7) lost to EAST FREMANTLE 7.5 (47)

East Fremantle set up next week's clash with Claremont still undefeated this Saturday with an impressive 40-point win on Saturday against Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval.

The Swans and Sharks did battle at the Bassendean venue having been strong rivals for a number of years including meeting in the inaugural WAFLW Grand Final.

Swans were the dominant team of 2021 as well before losing the Grand Final to Peel Thunder while East Fremantle missed the finals, but the Sharks continued to show how determined they are to make up for that.

It was another impressive victory for East Fremantle on Saturday away from home, ending up beating Swan Districts 7.5 (47) to 1.1 (7).

East Fremantle came into the game determined to keep their undefeated season going and kicked the only goal against Swan Districts in the first quarter with the only two scoring shots.

It was a similar story in the second quarter with Swans again not managing a shot on goal while the Sharks kicked their second goal of the contest to head into the half-time break leading by 15 points.

Swans did manage a behind in the third term, but East Fremantle kicked their third goal and led by 21 points at three quarter-time.

East Fremantle really got on a roll then in the final term with four goals and while Swan Districts did kick their lone goal of the game, the Sharks romped to the 7.5 (47) to 1.1 (7) victory.

Julia Teakle continued her good form up forward for East Fremantle kicking another two goals from six kicks, two marks and four inside-50 entries.

Larissa Versaci also kicked two goals for the Sharks to go with 22 disposals, four marks, four inside 50s and three tackles.

Ashleigh Gomes had an impressive performance too for East Fremantle with 23 possessions, five marks, five tackles and four inside-50 entries.

Beth Beckett also finished with 19 disposals, Amber Kinnane 15 (eight tackles), Mylee Leitch 15 and Sharon Wong 14 to go with eight tackles.

Laura Catherine was again impressive in the ruck with 10 touches, four marks and 30 hit outs.

WEST PERTH 0.2 (2) lost to PEEL THUNDER 10.12 (72)

Peel Thunder rose to third position in the WAFLW competition after 10 rounds of the 2022 season with a strong win over West Perth on Sunday.

Peel hadn’t won since also beating West Perth back in Round 7 with a loss to East Fremantle in Round 8 and then the bye last weekend, but they bounced back impressively on Sunday at Joondalup's Pentanet Stadium.

The Thunder kicked the only 10 goals of the game to end up winning 10.12 (72) to 0.2 (2) and improve to 4-4 on the season in the third spot while the Falcons have lost their opening eight matches of their inaugural season.

Peel needed a bounce back victory to maintain their hold on a top four position and they came out of the blocks well despite being a long way from home with the only five scoring shots of the first quarter, and kicking three goals from those.

It was another two goals from Peel in the second quarter with West Perth remaining scoreless to see the Thunder head into the half-time break with a 35-point advantage.

Peel managed another three goals in the third quarter to extend their lead to 58 points, and then two goals further in the last term while West Perth scored two behinds.

That saw the Thunder end up winning 10.12 (72) to 0.2 (2).

Kate Bartlett continued her emergence as one of the brightest young stars of the competition and the best goalkicking forward with another five goals for the Thunder to go with 17 possessions and six tackles.

Kira Phillips also kicked three goals from nine kicks and four marks.

Gracie Fenton was outstanding once more for the Thunder with 30 possessions, seven inside 50s and five tackles with Jade Briggs amassing 27 disposals, Jade Britton 25, Chloe Wrigley 22, Ebony Dowson 20, Ebony Bilcich 19 and Ebonee Hardie 18.

It was another tough afternoon for West Perth in their inaugural WAFLW season but Karla Stagg battled hard for 23 possessions.

Jessica Roper also finished with 20 touches, five marks and five tackles while Megan Norbury had 17 disposals, Kaitlyn Roper 15 and Keely Byrne 14.

CLAREMONT 5.2 (32) defeated SUBIACO 2.7 (19)

Claremont had to dig deep but kicked the only four goals of the final quarter to beat Subiaco by 13 points at Revo Fitness Stadium on Sunday.

The Tigers managed just the one goal over the first three quarters against the Lions, but they kicked four goals in the final term to score the 5.2 (32) to 2.7 (19) to set up their top of the table clash with East Fremantle in Northampton this coming Saturday.

Claremont came into Sunday's game needing to win to set up their shot at top spot against East Fremantle next week but Subiaco also needed a bounce back victory to remain in any sort of contention of a top four finish.

Subiaco actually had three scoring shots to Claremont's one in the opening quarter, but the Tigers kicked a goal and the Lions just the three behinds.

Claremont was then scoreless in the second quarter with Subiaco managing a goal and that helped the Lions take a four-point advantage into half-time.

Again the Tigers didn’t manage to score in the third quarter and the Lions kicked their second goal and were on top by 13 points at three quarter-time.

Claremont had to dig deep or their shot at top position might have got away from them and the Tigers produced a scintillating final quarter with four goals to end up winning 5.2 (32) to 2.7 (19).

Ella Slocombe made the most of her chances up forward for Claremont kicking three goals from her three kicks in the game. Ella Smith also kicked two goals to go with 18 possessions, four marks and four tackles.

Jasmin Stewart finished with 22 possessions and eight marks for the Tigers with Rachel Ortlepp finishing with 19 disposals, Kate Orme 18, Brooke Hongell 17 and Claire Ortlepp 16.

Subiaco's goals came courtesy of Kate Pocsidio and Hayley Corlett.

Abbey Dowrick had a strong performance for the Lions with 22 disposals, eight inside-50 entries and six tackles.

Jayme Harken finished with 20 touches for the Lions, Tarnica Golisano 16 and Madizen Wilkins 15 to go with 11 tackles.
