WAFLW State Team fight to the finish against QueenslandMonday, July 22, 2019 - 9:57 AM

The WAFL Women's State Team was defeated by 26 points by a talent-laden Queensland team in a hard-fought contest at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday, July 20.

The WAFLW team took an early lead with Emily McGuire kicking her first of two goals for the afternoon.

Queensland, which had 14 AFLW listed players from the Gold Coast Suns Academy, hit back in the second and third quarters before stretching their lead in the fourth to run out winners 6.10 (46) to 3.2 (20).

Sarah Garstone also kicked a goal to be named among WA's best along with Ann McMahon, Imahra Cameron and Claire Ortlep.

WAFC Talent Manager - Female Programs Clint Degebrodt said all of the WAFLW's best players had shown they could match it with Queensland's AFLW-listed talent on the day.

"The game was a great opportunity to showcase the talent playing in the WAFLW competition and all of WA's best players proved they've got the talent to compete against AFLW players," he said.

"The game was a good hit-out and the scoreline probably didn't reflect how close the overall contest was."
