Round 19 – East Fremantle v Subiaco Match ReportMonday, July 31, 2017 - 3:19 AM - by Chris Pike

SUBIACO cruised to a 16th straight WAFL victory this season opening an 80-point lead by three quarter-time and going on to beat East Fremantle by 61 points at East Fremantle Oval on Saturday.

East Fremantle had reason to think it could take it up to Subiaco after putting in a good showing in Round 10 and also being in reasonable form prior to the bye winning two of its past five games, and being strongly competitive in two of those other losses.

But Subiaco didn’t come into the contest feeling any sense of over-confidence starting strongly and opening up an 80-point lead by three quarter-time.

East Fremantle was at least able to reduce the bleeding and win the final quarter but the Lions still scored the thumping 19.8 (122) to 9.7 (61) victory.

The win is a 16th straight this season for Subiaco since a Round 1 loss to South Fremantle. With just three games of their season to go against Swan Districts, West Perth and East Perth, even losing all three might not be enough to cost them the minor premiership.

East Fremantle slipped back to the bottom spot on the ladder below Perth on percentage with the Sharks' season to finish against South Fremantle, West Perth, Peel Thunder and Swan Districts.

Subiaco's forward-line continues to function well with a host of different players capable of stepping up on any given day.

This Saturday it was Bernie Naylor Medal leader Liam Ryan kicking another five goals from 15 possessions and six goals while Brad Stevenson joined in with five majors from 14 disposals and seven marks. Ben Sokol also kicked another two goals.

The back-line was again rock solid led by Jordan Lockyer with 19 possessions and Declan Jackson while Wayde Twomey also had 22 possessions, Corey Adamson 22, Angus Litherland 16 and Greg Clark 14.

Adam Creeper returned from suspension to have 33 hit outs in the ruck while Lachlan Delahunty was tremendous both in the middle and across half-forward with 23 possessions, four marks, 19 hit outs, six inside 50s and a goal.

Max Walters stepped up too for another outstanding performance with 27 disposals, nine marks and six tackles.

Adam Cockie continued his brilliant form with 27 possessions and two goals with Justin Joyce finishing with 26 disposals, Craig Hoskins 23, Scott Hancock 19, Kyal Horsley 18 and Leigh Kitchin 17.

Dion Anthony worked hard and effectively for East Fremantle kicking three goals while collecting 23 possessions. Jack Perham also kicked two goals.

Jonathon Marsh did a power of work in the midfield for 36 possessions and nine tackles with Cameron Eardley also finishing with 28 disposals and eight tackles.

George Hampson threatened a big afternoon but kicked just 1.4 from 23 touches against his former team that he won the 2014 premiership with.

Jayden Schofield gathered another 23 possessions, Tom Marshall 18, Tom Bennett 18 and returning captain Jamie McNamara 16 while Michael Cronan finished with 36 hit outs in the ruck.

East Fremantle had put in a competitive showing against Subiaco back in Round 10 and started well again on Saturday with the opening goal of the game from Jesse Adamini.

The positivity was short-lived with Subiaco booting four goals in the next 12 minutes from Ryan, Sokol, Joyce and Cockie.

The Sharks did get a steadier through Matthew Watson but the Lions ended the opening term with a goal to Twomey to lead by 22 points. It was Twomey's first goal of 2017.

It took just 25 seconds for Subiaco to make the margin 28 points with Stevenson booting his first of the afternoon.

The Lions rammed home their advantage further after a Sharks goal from Marsh with majors to Cockie, Ryan, Kitchin and Sokol before an East Fremantle major to Perham just before the siren cut the half-time deficit to 42 points.

Subiaco then further dominated the third term with Ryan kicking his third, fourth and fifth of the game, Stevenson his second, third and fourth, and James Garcia, and Delahunty also chipping in.

That saw the Lions lead balloon to 80 points by three quarter-time. To East Fremantle's credit it did respond in the last quarter with four goals to one to cut the final losing margin to 61 points.

Coming off playing the top team on 15-game winning streak, East Fremantle now plays the second placed South Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday with the Bulldogs having won their past seven matches.

Subiaco will look to make 17 in-a-row on Saturday playing Swan Districts at Leederville Oval.
