Multicultural program reaches new heightsFriday, August 26, 2016 - 4:36 PM

Two Intensive English Centre (IEC) schools battled it out in the inaugural AFL IEC Senior Division Cup on Thursday August 18, as part of the West Australian Football Commission’s (WAFC) Multicultural School Football program.

North Lake Senior Campus and Cyril Jackson Senior Campus went head-to-head in the first ever AFL game for the program in front of a crowd of more than 100 teachers and students.

Cyril Jackson proved too good for North Lake and ran out 27-point winners at the conclusion of the match held at Alan Edwards Park, Kardinya.

The best player from each team was presented with a Burley football signed by West Coast Eagles superstar Nic Naitanui and an AFL Guernsey signed by talent Fremantle Dockers player Tendai Mzungu.

Representatives of the program's major partners attended the event, including Senior Community Engagement Officer at the Office of Multicultural Interest Said Pashah and Fremantle Dockers Community Coordinator.

North Lake IEC Program Coordinator Sean Bruce-Cullen said the students’ had shown a great deal of improvement in their skills and knowledge of the sport over the course of the six-week program.

“They have come a long way in such a short time,” Bruce-Cullen said.

“They have been able to experience something incredibly new and different and have had the opportunity to learn about the Australian culture.”

“All the students have thoroughly enjoyed the experience.”

Cyril Jackson IEC Coordinator Debra Fitzsimmons said the program plays a vital role in strengthening social inclusion within the school community.

“This is a fantastic initiative that the WAFC is running and something we hope will run for the entirety of the school year in the future,” Fitzsimmons said.
