Mundijong Centrals successfully launch female footballWednesday, May 4, 2016 - 10:37 AM

The Mundijong Centrals Junior Football Club celebrated on Sunday, May 1 when two all-girls teams took to the field at Mundijong Oval for the first time in the club's history.

After a successful launch in February, the club was inundated with enquiries and registrations from girls aged 8 to 16 and nominated two teams in season 2016, one each in the U12 junior girls and U15 youth girls competitions.

Tracey Rafferty, the clubs Female Football Co-ordinator and Registrar, credits the success of the launch to the enormous amount of support received from the West Australian Football Commission, Female Football Ambassadors Mikella Johnson and Hayley Miller, and the South Fremantle Women’s Football Club.

“It was fantastic to have the Ambassadors share their football journeys with the girls and their families and I know they have inspired a few to take on the challenge to become good footballers," she said.

"It was beneficial for the girls to see there is a pathway in female football all the way to the top. We truly appreciate the support they have given us in launching female football.”

South Fremantle Women’s Football Club President Jodi Vamvas and players attended the event and conducted a skills session with the players. This was invaluable and a great experience for all the participants.

Tracey said the launch of female football has been an exciting time for both the club and the community.

"The club is blown away with the interest female football has generated," she said.

"The club celebrated the first game with a big crowd and banners for the girls to run through. It was fantastic to see the girls playing football with such vigour and determination while having fun with their friends.

"The camaraderie between the girls and the support each team gave the other resulted in a memorable occasion for all involved."

The Mundijong Centrals U15 Youth Girls celebrated their first game with a convincing win and to the Mundijong Centrals U12 Junior Girls also played brilliantly (no score is recorded at this level).

The Mundijong Centrals Junior Football Club looks forward to a successful 2016 season and hopes to provide opportunities for female football at the club for many years to come.
