The AFL School Ambassador of the Year Awards will once again be presented at the 2011 Celebration of AFL Education Dinner at Patersons Stadium in August this year. These prestigious awards recognise teachers who have excelled in enhancing learning and promoting physical activity through quality AFL programs in WA Schools during 2011.
INTRODUCTION
The AFL School Ambassador (AFLSA) program was introduced into WA schools in 2004. It aims to produce enhanced educational outcomes in literacy, numeracy, health and physical education by providing quality AFL resources to schools and by recognising and rewarding teachers who strongly promote our game in their school and community.
The 2011 AFL School Ambassador of the Year awards will be presented to WA’s best AFL School Ambassadors. The awards provide recognition and fantastic rewards for teachers who perform at a high level throughout 2011. Recognition will also be given to AFL School Ambassadors who given great service to the program over an extended period of 5 or more years.
The West Australian Football Commission (WAFC), through its Education Advisory Group, and supported by the AFL, will present 3 MAJOR AFL School Ambassador awards and 4 Special Category awards in 2011:
The 2011 AFL School Ambassador of the Year Award will once again be supported by “BHP Billiton, the Principal Community partner of the West Coast Eagles”.
AWARDS, ELIGBILITY CRITERIA & NOMINATION INFORMATION
1. AFL School Ambassador of the Year Award (Partner – “BHP Billiton, the Principal Community partner of the West Coast Eagles”).
The Ambassador, from a WA school, judged to be the teacher who implemented the most significant AFL program in their school during 2011 will win a trip for 2 to the AFL Grand Final.

2. Most Outstanding Primary School AFL School Ambassador Award
The AFL School Ambassador, from a WA primary school, judged to have made an outstanding contribution to the AFLSA program in 2011 will win a trip for two (2) to the MCG to watch an AFL Elimination Final during the weekend of the 9 -11th of September.

3. Most Outstanding Secondary School AFL School Ambassador Award
The AFL School Ambassador, from a WA Secondary school, judged to have made an outstanding contribution to the AFLSA program in 2011 will win a trip for two (2) to the MCG to watch an AFL Elimination Final during the weekend of the 9 – 11th of September..

SPECIAL CATEGORY AWARDS with Eligibility Criteria
4. Outstanding First Year AFL School Ambassador Award - Ambassador must have been inducted into the program in 2011.
5. Outstanding Remote/Indigenous AFL School Program Award - Ambassador must be located in a country school classified as Remote by the Department of Education, Catholic Education Office or AISWA.
6. Outstanding Female AFL School Program Award - Ambassador must have conducted a program that has successfully engaged female students in AFL activities in 2011.
7. Outstanding Multicultural AFL School Program Award - Ambassador must have conducted a program that has successfully engaged multicultural students in AFL activities in 2011.The AFL School Ambassador, from a WA school, judged to have made an outstanding contribution to the AFLSA program in 2011 in any one of the categories listed above.

NOMINATION DEADLINE
All on line Nomination forms must be completed by FRIDAY 8th JULY 2011, 5pm sharp.
The nomination form is brief to encourage as many nominations as possible. If selected as a category finalist, the nominated Ambassador will then be requested to provide additional supporting evidence for consideration by the WAFC Selection Panel for the awards.
THE SELECTION PROCESS
The selection process for all AFL School Ambassador of the Year awards is as follows.
All AFL School Ambassador of the Year nominations for all categories received by Colin West, General Manager, Development and Education at the West Australian Football Commission, will be provided to a WAFC Panel, comprising Education Team members, who will select the finalists for each category (max 5 per category).
These Ambassador Finalists will be asked to provide additional information to support their nomination. This must be provided on an on line “FINALIST’S Form and be no more than 500 words. Click here to access the on line Finalist’s Form. Finalist’s forms must be completed by FRIDAY 29th JULY, 5pm Sharp!
All Finalists will be invited to the Presentation Ceremony at a Special Function at Subiaco Oval on Wednesday 10th August.
The State Judging Panel, listed below, will review the Finalists and select all the winners.

Q. What are the judges looking for?
A. Please read the Nomination and Selection Criteria but winners will have demonstrated initiative, innovation, best practice and clear evidence of student engagement, enjoyment and learning.
Q. If selected as a Finalist how much additional information in required to be submitted by the Ambassador?
A. Category finalists should complete the Finalists’ on line form outlining, in a maximum of 500 words, additional information not included in the original nomination form (250 words). This could include;
- Number of AFL programs & competitions the school participated in that year
- Strength of relationship with District Development Staff
- Strength of relationship with their local Junior and/or Senior football clubs
- Participation rate of students in Junior football (i.e. % of students playing weekend footy)
Q. Can anyone nominate for the other Awards?
A. Yes, Any Principal, AFL School Ambassador, teacher, Smarter than Smoking Development Staff, junior football club official, student and/or parent may nominate an AFL School Ambassador for any of these awards.
