Footy dreaming in the Kimberley Desert

THERE are two life sources for residents of Looma, a remote indigenous community in the
Kimberley.
One is the Fitzroy River that offers a cool respite from the harsh summer as well as the staple diet of barramundi, catfish and
cherubin, a freshwater prawn revered by the locals.
The other is footy.
Every Saturday in season, most of the 300-strong community make the 520km round trip to
Broome to watch the Looma Eagles play in the West Kimberley competition.

Peel Girls Thunder On

On a perfect day for football with cloudless skies, sunshine and a slight breeze, the best youth girls in the metropolitan area and southern regions competed against eachother at Lightning Park in Noranda on Saturday, August 29.

Substantially growing in numbers from three teams in 2008 to eight teams this year, the carnival gave the girls a chance to show why they want to play more than just one day a year.

The football skills of the participants improved as the carnival progressed, with every metropolitan District represented, together with girls travelling from Carnarvon, Northam, Katanning, Albany, Busselton and Bunbury.

Bumper chance for junior footy clubs

Junior Football Clubs have the chance to win one of three amazing prizes through the use of bumper stickers thanks to a new campaign being run by ABC Radio and the West Australian Football Commission.

The promotion is an excellent opportunity for each metropolitan and regional Junior Football Clubs to promote and establish themselves within their communities, substantially boosting each club’s identity and presence.

Preliminary final weekend in the WAAFL

It’s preliminary final weekend in the WAAFL with B through to H grades taking the field in hope of earning a chance to contest the Grand Finals next weekend.

After a long home and away season only three teams remain in each grade and this weekend’s preliminary final blockbusters will lead to either elation or devastation with the winners advancing through to the Grand Final (And promotion for some) while the losers face the prospect of an early mad Monday.

Grand Finalists decided

Grand Finalists were decided for the WA Women's Football League (WAWFL) after the preliminary-finals were played at EFTel Oval on the weekend.
 
EFTel Oval, home of the Perth Demons WAFL side, will also host the WAWFL Grand Finals this Sunday, September 6, starting at 12.30pm when South Fremantle and the Joondalup Falcons will battle it out for the Division 2 Premiership.

Coastal Titans will then face East Fremantle Sharks (pictured) at 2.30pm for the Division 1 Premiership.

Youth Girls Carnival kicking off

More than 100 female football players will arrive at Lightning Park in Noranda tomorrow, Saturday, August 29, to compete in the second annual Youth Girls Carnival sponsored by the Department of Sport and Recreation.

The carnival, which has grown from three teams last season to eight this year, will be contested by the best under-18 females from around WA, with each metropolitan district selecting an All-Star team to compete against WA Country and a combined Western Waves side.

Joondalup set sights on Grand Final

Joondalup women’s football team will face Coastal Titans at 12.30pm this Sunday at EFTel Oval to earn a place in the grand final against South Fremantle.

The Joondalup team has enjoyed a stellar season, finishing third on the ladder and defeating East Fremantle in last weekend's elimination final with a strong team and a taste for victory.

WAWFL Heating Up on the Way to September

The 23rd WAWFL Finals series kicked off on the weekend with Coastal Titans and and Swan Districts running out winners in Division 1, while Joondalup and South Fremantle claimed victory in the second division.
