Female Football Talent Showcase

WA’s female football talent will be showcased this Sunday when the ‘Yorga’s Koodjal Kadadjiny’ match is played at Perth Demon’s Football Club as part of  NAIDOC Week celebrations.

The ‘Yorga’s Koodjal Kadadjiny’ match, which means Women’s Two Way Learning Match, kicks off at 2:30pm this Sunday, July 8 and will feature an Indigenous All Stars team against a WA Women’s Football League All Stars side.

WAWFL and State Schoolgirls curtain-raiser games will also be played on the day.

The All Star teams will be lead by WA State Women’s Coach, Sandover Medallist and former Fremantle Docker, Neil Mildenhall, as well as Swan Districts Player Development Officer Steve Thompson, with assistance from Peter Farmer and Charlie Headland.

The interest from indigenous players was overwhelming for this year’s Yorga’s match, meaning a selection match was played on May 26 to finalise the Indigenous All Stars team. The WAWFL All-Stars were nominated by their coaches and selected by the Yorga’s match committee.

Following the success of the inaugural match in 2010, the WAWFL is keen to make this year’s game even bigger and better, bringing on board the help of the West Australian Football Commission (WAFC), and securing a major sponsor, Kooya Consultancy.

Peter Farmer was commissioned to design the playing jumpers that will be unique to the Yorga Match and are available for purchase to the public.

The game will celebrate indigenous Australian women’s love of playing football and promote reconciliation between indigenous and non-indigenous players. Being an alcohol, smoke and drug free event also helps to promote healthy lifestyle messages.

The match will also pay tribute to Sharon Woods and Elizabeth Kickett, who were significant contributors to the WAWFL during its formative years. Elizabeth Kickett has since passed away from cancer and in her memory, the WAWFL is raising awareness of breast cancer – the most common cancer experienced by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander and non-indigenous women alike.

A gold coin donation collected at the gate on game day will go towards the Breast Cancer Foundation.
