Titans and Thunderbirds Claim Victory in Historic Grand Finals

The WAWFL season came to a dramatic conclusion on the weekend with the Coastal Titans stealing a one point victory from a gallant Swan Districts in the dying stages of a brutal encounter.  In a see-sawing affair at EFTel it was Titans veteran Amy Cotterell who calmly slotted a goal with only seconds remaining to give the Coastal Titans their fifth premiership in seven seasons.

Swan Districts went into the match warm favourites after going through the home and away season undefeated but the Titans, who beat Swans in the second semi final two weeks ago, called on all their finals experience to snatch victory with seconds to spare.

After heading into the break down by three points the Swan Districts side came out firing in the last, controlling the majority of the quarter and showing the form which saw them finish undefeated at the top of the ladder.

With Angela Doyle and Jacinda Barclay getting on top for Swan Districts they found themselves in front with only minutes to play but the Titans experience came to the forefront, peppering their goals in the final stages before finally getting the winner through best afield, Amy Cotterell.

In Division 2, it was the newly formed Peel Thunderbirds who took control early and ran away with an easy victory over an inexperienced South Fremantle side. The Thunderbirds controlled the match from the outset largely through the high marking of Sabrina Traub and tough work in close of Levi McCulloch, the latter winning the umpires praise as best a field in their inaugrual premiership.

The match was highlighted by its youthfullness with both sides fielding inexperienced yet talented sides with the majority of players in their first season of senior football.

The win caps off an impressive year for both sides, the Thunderbirds in their first year of senior football and South Fremantle fielding two sides for the first time in their short history.
