Schoolgirls compete for Tan Cup

GIRLS from Churchlands Senior High School and Warwick Senior High School competed for the annual Tan Cup blockbuster at Warwick late in Term 2, with Churchlands claiming a narrow two-goal victory in a close contest.

The Tan Cup is a competition is organised by Chris Tan (Churchlands SH) and his father Ray (Warwick SH) to showcase the talents of girls in the game of Australian Rules Football.

Both father and son are coaches at their respective schools for the Smarter than Smoking Girls Football competition.

To expose the girls of both teams to the finer points of footy, Dan Barnes and representatives from the Claremont District were present to conduct a coaching clinic before the game.

Students practiced and trained alongside their opponents until it was time to play. After that, the true grit of the game was displayed.

Both teams showed enormous tenacity in a very even competition, with Churchlands eventual victors by two goals.

The day finished off ideally with a sausage sizzle to celebrate what was essentially a good game and the girls being such great ambassadors for their school.

Congratulations to Rachel Bell of Churchlands who was presented a ball for being player of the match.
