The West Perth Football District located in Perth’s Northern Suburbs has been given a huge boost in their aim to grow and develop female football.
The West Perth District was recently awarded $2000 from the Australian Sports Commission to put 18 female football coaches through Level 1 Coaching Accreditation programs in early 2011.
The Sport Leadership Grants for Women program is an initiative of the Australian Government that is managed by the Australian Sports Commission in partnership with the Australian Government's Office for Women.
The program provides development opportunities and training for women to reach their leadership potential on the sporting stage as coaches, officials and administrators.
“The grants will provide a quality opportunity for females with a love of football to further their skills, knowledge and passion for the game,” said Smarter than Smoking West Perth District Manager Andrew Ridley.
“Females make up a large proportion of our volunteer support base, yet our appointed coaching lists at local clubs are heavily dominated by males. This program aims to encourage our female volunteers to put their hand up for a coaching role.”
Female football is strong within the West Perth Football District with the Joondalup Women’s Football Club fielding a team in both the League and Reserves divisions of the WAWFL. The District actively supports girls to take up football as a sporting option with pathways available at all levels.
“Female football is growing at an enormous rate,” Ridley said. “What a better way to attract females to our sport than with female coaches.”
