PLC students support Women’s Championships

Students from Presbyterian Ladies College gained behind the scenes insight at a major football match when they volunteered at the AFL Women’s National Championships.

Players travelled from across Australia for the Championships which were played at WAFL grounds across Perth from July from June 3 to 7.

All-Australian Women’s side

THE All-Australian AFL Women’s team was announced at the completion of the AFL Women’s National Championship in Perth at the weekend, with the best 22 players named by the All-Australian Panel.  

Selection was based on the performance of players throughout the AFL Women’s National Championships, including the Division One and Two Grand Finals, which were won by Victoria and South Australia against WA and New South Wales respectively.

Victorians win Grand Final clash

VICTORIA won the Grand Final of the AFL Women’s National Championship by 38 points at Subiaco Oval on Sunday after an entertaining clash with hosts Western Australia.

WA made a strong start with Krystle Rivers and Nikki Harwood each kicking goals to take a narrow lead at quarter time. With the crowd behind them, WA grabbed an early point in the second term before a goal-square scramble saw Victoria kick their second goal to level the scores.

Victoria too stong

Vic 10.0.60 defeated WA 3.4.22
 
Victoria were crowned 2009 AFL Women's National Championship winners at Subiaco Oval on Sunday after a battle with WA at the home of football.
 
Although scoring first, Victoria had no answer to WA in the opening quarter as they set the record straight after their big loss in the round robin stages. After going down to a 96 point margin and failing to score a goal at Fremantle Oval, WA looked like a different side with a confidence and belief they lacked on Thursday.

Victoria continue their winning ways

Vic 7.6.48 defeated Queensland 1.1.7
 
Victoria completed a clean sweep of wins in their AFL Women's National Championships round robin fixtures overcoming a dogged Queensland side at Claremont.
 
Queensland showed little regard for Victoria's reputation as their players fought out much of the game in the middle of the oval; their last ditch defence in their 50m area kept them within touching distance of Victoria for much of the game.
