Vale Jack Carey

THE WA Amateur Football League is in mourning with the passing of one of its great players and administrators, Jack Carey.

Jack started his football career in 1946 with the original but now defunct East Fremantle Amateur Football Club, playing over 150 games before retiring in the late 1950’s.

Manning Move into Third

MANNING Rippers claimed an important 34-point victory over Swan Valley in wet and windy conditions at Swan Valley Sporting Complex last weekend.

Ash Bentley and Shaun Sullivan kicked four goals each to lead Manning to a comfortable 14.15 (99) to 10.5 (65), propelling them to third position on the C3 Grade table.

IN a sport where players are known for their courage, the story of North Fremantle’s Joshua Cunniffe is perhaps one of the most courageous of all. Joshua was only a teenager when he was diagnosed with depression, battling with anxiety, anger, sadness and isolation for years before he sought help to conqueror his demons, and now the teenager wants his experiences to help those in a similar place.

Bulls Turn Tables on University

MADDINGTON has upset second placed University by 2 points in wet conditions in last weekend’s A Grade fixture at Harmony Fields.

After losing by over 100 points the last time the two teams played, the Bulls signalled their intentions early, taking control from the first bounce.

At the end of the first quarter it was the Bulls who led by two goals, the second quarter was much the same and saw the Bulls ahead at the main break by a solitary goal.

Dianella Represented at AFL International Cup

DIANELLA Morley midfielder Paul Barry has earned a late call-up to the Great Britain squad for the 2011 AFL International Cup.

Barry, 37, converted from soccer to Australian Rules Football in 2008, playing in the AFL London league before migrating to Perth and joining Dianella Morley in May 2010.

He’s known as a hard-working winger and on-baller for Dianella, playing the majority of his football in the E3 Division but also earning selection in the C3 Reserves.

Kenwick Clinch Victory

KENWICK has defeated fellow C Grade side Carlisle by 58 points at Carlisle Reserve on Saturday to keep their slim finals hopes alive.

The Royals needed a win to stay in touch with the top 5 and quickly established a 23-point lead by the end of the first quarter, increasing the margin to 36 by the main break.

Armadale over Dianella Morley in a Thriller

DIANELLA Morley has snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, losing to Armadale by a point 8.11 (59) to 8.10 (58) in C3 action at Light Street on Saturday.

Trailing by 5 points with seconds to go, a free kick led to a last ditch lead and mark by Armadale’s Dudley Michael, who converted his fifth major of the game right on full time.

Akermanis a Special Guest at Henderson Park

FORMER Brisbane Lion and Western Bulldog champion Jason Akermanis was a special guest at Henderson Park last night, taking training for the combined Wembley Colts and Marist Junior Football Club under 17’s squads.

The 2001 Brownlow Medalist wore a Wembley jumper as he took the squad through drills, but training is only one of the reasons he’s at the club, also speaking at the Wembley Quiz Night on Saturday – but not only about football.

“I’ve had a pretty interesting life,” Akermanis said.

WAAFL Recognise Volunteers

THE  WA Amateur Football League will recognise the thousands of hours of work put in by its volunteers with the presentation of Volunteer Recognition Awards during this weekend’s heritage round celebrations.

General Manager of Senior Metropolitan Community Football Cameron Agnew said that volunteers were an integral part of community football.

“In creating the Volunteer Recognition Awards the WAAFL has provided another means to recognize those integral people involved in club football, volunteers” Agnew said.
