AFL recruiters on the lookout during 2011 Landmark Country Football Championships

The tension is building as hundreds of the best footballers from around the State descend on Perth for the 2011 Landmark Country Football Championships.

General Manager of the West Australian Country Football League, Cameron Knapton, says he is excited about the level of football that is going to be played from July 14-17 at grounds around Perth.

“We’ve got around 500 of the State’s best country footballers coming to Perth for the four day carnival,” he said.

Country footy kicks goals for men’s mental health and suicide prevention

Country football players from Broome to Beverley have committed to break down the stigma surrounding mental illness and suicide on and off the field by signing up to One Life WA’s State Suicide Prevention Strategy.

Each month the West Australian Country Football League will host a men’s mental health forum in a country town, highlighting the need for men to have their mental health screened.

Mental Health Minister Helen Morton said football and mental health shared similar philosophies of communication, teamwork and resilience, making it the perfect arena to talk about men’s mental health.

Peel hoping to go one better at 2011 Landmark Championships

THE Peel Football League is hoping to go one better than last year at the upcoming Landmark Country Football Championships, which kicks off on Thursday, July 14 at grounds around the metropolitan area.

In their first regular entry into the carnival last year, Peel came agonizingly close to snatching the A-section title from Upper Great Southern, who have dominated the competition for the past decade, losing the grand final by just five points.

New coach Clayton Falkingham says their aim this year is to knock off UGSFL. “We beat them in the first match last year but they came and got over us in the grand final,” he said.

Landmark Country Football Championships vital preparation for State Country Squad

This year’s Landmark Country Football Championships will be a crucial test for players vying to make the WA Country Football League team to travel to Adelaide next month.

New coach Paul Pannell, pictured, says the squad of 33 will be whittled down based on their performance during the four day Landmark carnival.

The WACFL team will play the South Australian Country Football team in the curtain raiser to Port Adelaide versus the Adelaide Crows on July 31st.

“What we’ve got in the squad at the moment is the players who play good footy in their local clubs around the State,” said Pannell.
