The game also coincides with Community Football Weekend, the major celebration of a year when Australian Football is celebrating its 150th year. The UGSFL was formed by the amalgamation of the Narrogin and District and Wagin and District leagues back in 1959. Only two original teams remain with most other teams now amalgamations of previous clubs. Barry Butterworth, General Manager of the UGSFL said the UGSFL representative team was very keen to have a good hit out against South Fremantle. “There is plenty of action on the football calendar this Saturday,” he said. “The UGSFL Junior Rams Development Squad under 14s will play the South Fremantle Warriors 14s, then the Under 20 UGSFL Colts will play the Under 17s from South Fremantle ahead of the feature game. “As part of the 50-year celebrations we will also be having a luncheon on Saturday for past officials from 12-2pm where about 30 people will be attending coming. Representatives from South Fremantle will also join them.” The UGSFL has produced many name footballers including Paul Duffield (Fremantle), Ricky Mott (Fremantle, Carlton, Sydney), Nathan Turvey (Hawthorn) and Roger Hayden (Fremantle). South Fremantle Football Manager Jason Burton said his club would try to take as many Upper Great Southern recruits as possible to play on the day. “We may even take some of the younger guys who may not have played a league game yet,” Burton said. “We will also take a few younger players who aren’t from the UGSFL so we can get a bit more of a look at them. “It’s the Upper Great Southern Football League’s day and we’re more than happy to be supporting their celebrations.” |
