Accreditation

Level 1
(There are three separate courses conducted to suit varying age groups).

All courses are conducted at local WAFL clubs by professionally training Development Officers and WAFL coaches. All course are competency based course whereby the coach must prove he/ she is capable of conducting and communicating the basics of the game to players of different ages.

Auskick - for coaches coaching 6-8 year olds (Auskick) and 9-12 year olds (Auskick Rules)

The philosophy of the AFL Auskick Program is to provide the opportunity for building foundation skills in primary age children for playing Australian Football which is appropriate to their needs emphasising fun and safety.

The course is designed for beginner coaches of children of primary school age. The target market includes parents, teachers, players, umpires, secondary and tertiary students. It runs for a whole day from 8am-5.30pm.

Coaches must be 16 years of age on completion of all Level 1 requirements to be eligible for accreditation.

Youth (13-17 year olds)

The philosophy of youth football is to provide an environment, which offers the opportunity for individuals to enhance their personal development and maximise their football potential.

This will be an inclusive and supportive environment, which encourages youth players to continue their participation in the game.

This course is designed for beginner coaches of players between the age of 13 and 17 years of age generally competing in under-age competitions.

The target market includes parents, teachers, players or umpires and tertiary and senior secondary students.

This course, which runs for one full day usually from 8am-5.30pm, is designed to provide training for the large number of youth coaches involved in Australian Football, especially at community club level

Senior (18+)

The level one senior coaching philosophy is creating an environment, which ensures all players can participate to their best level and enjoy their participation in a community football competition.

This course, which runs for one day from 8am - 5.30pm is designed for beginner coaches of players over the age 17 years of age generally competing in open-age competitions.

The target market includes parents, teachers, players or umpires and tertiary and senior secondary students. This course is designed to provide training for the large number of open-age coaches involved in Australian Football, especially at community club level.

Level 2

Ideal for coaches involved at a higher level (rep teams, development squads, etc.). For coaches with an aptitude and genuine interest in improving their coaching skills The course commences with a 2-day workshop Around 30 hours of course work is required in addition to practical involvement. Conducted through practical, hands-on involvement of participants. The course focuses on preparing a coach to plan, prepare, conduct, review and adapt a year-long program of coaching. Coaches are assessed practically on the job at training and in a match environment

Coaches must have completed a level 1 course in youth or senior prior to gaining a level 2 accreditation. There is a level 2 course conducted each year in WA. All coaches must be endorsed by their district aligned WAFL Club

Level 3

The level 3 course accreditation is for coaches involved in AFL, state leagues, TAC cup or other programs in the AFL Talent Pathway. Coaches working in or aspiring to this level may apply to be invited to a week-long, live in program. The highest accreditation offered by the AFL. Covers in greater depth those areas dealt with in level 2 plus relevant current issues, including technology, public relations and coaches as program managers and mentors.

Re-accreditation

Accreditation is valid for 4 years, from the year in which accreditation is gained.
If you gain a higher level of accreditation during that four year period, the expiry relates only to the higher accreditation.
Application to re-accredit at Level 1 should be made direct to your local WAFL Smarter Than Smoking District Development Officer or to the Coordinator for Coaching and Talent Karl Pirrottina. Re-accreditation is not automatic.

To maintain your Level 1 accreditation you must demonstrate that you:

Continued to coach throughout the four years
Were a registered member of your Australian Football Coaches Association branch throughout the four years
Are prepared to sign the AFL Coaches Code of conduct (or State specific version) when seeking re-accreditation.
Are prepared to submit to any coach screening procedures required at the time of re-accreditation.
Have continued to undertake further education, formal or informal, to enhance your coaching abilities. This might include attendance at AFCA seminars; training sessions of other coaches (particularly mentor coaches); attendance at courses or sessions within courses; training, in CPR, First Aid, communication skills, and so on.
