The West Australian Football Commission will recognise football’s unsung heroes following the launch of the 2010 RAC Volunteer of the Year Award in conjunction with National Volunteer Week from May 10 to 16.

Now in its fifth year, the RAC Volunteer of the Year award has grown each season, with almost 300 nominations received in 2009 and Peel District volunteer Robyn Sutton named overall winner after 20 years of service to Waroona Junior Football Club.

Mrs Sutton received a trip for two to the AFL grand final including flights, accommodation and a grand final breakfast function.

West Australian Football Commission club and volunteer development coordinator Glenn Morley said that this year, extra incentives were being offered to encourage even more nominations, including weekly AFL ticket giveaways.

“We’ve received almost 100 nominations this year already but we are hoping for even more,” Mr Morley said. “As an added bonus we are selecting weekly winners from the nominations to receive tickets to an AFL game at Subiaco Oval.”

The first weekly winner was Gwenda Wilmott from the Subiaco District. Those nominating a candidate for Volunteer of the Year also go in the running to win weekly AFL tickets.

In 2010, the WAFC in conjunction with the RAC will be awarding a Volunteer Award in each of the 17 Football Districts and Regions. Each of the District and Regional winners will be invited with a guest to the 2010 Sandover Medal, where each will be acknowledged for their efforts amongst some of WA football’s finest contributors.

The overall State Winner of the RAC Volunteer of the Year Award will also be announced on the night and receive a trip for two to the 2010 AFL Grand Final, including flights, accommodation and tickets to the Grand Final breakfast function.
